Cleveland, located on the southern shore of Lake Erie, has been a vital industrial and cultural hub since its founding in 1796. The city quickly developed into a major shipping and manufacturing center, with its location along the Great Lakes making it a key link in trade routes across the country. The construction of the Ohio and Erie Canal in the early 19th century cemented Cleveland’s status as a transportation hub, fueling its economic growth.
Cleveland encompasses all of Cuyahoga County, historically known for its steel production and manufacturing. In recent decades, the city has expanded into sectors like healthcare and technology, with the Cleveland Clinic, one of the world’s top medical institutions, playing a central role in its economy. Cleveland’s position along Lake Erie also maintains its prominence in shipping and Great Lakes trade.
Cleveland is home to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, designed by architect I.M. Pei and located on the city’s lakefront. Since its opening in 1995, the museum has housed over 35,000 artifacts and hundreds of exhibits celebrating the history of rock music. Other cultural institutions include the Cleveland Museum of Art, Severance Hall (home to the Cleveland Orchestra), and Playhouse Square, one of the largest performing arts centers in the U.S. Cleveland has also appeared in popular television, including an episode of 30 Rock and as the setting for The Drew Carey Show.
Cleveland’s "Emerald Necklace" park system, managed by Cleveland Metroparks, stretches over 23,000 acres and includes 18 reservations. The parks offer hiking, biking trails, golf courses, and scenic waterfronts. The city is also home to the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo and the Greater Cleveland Aquarium, providing residents and visitors with diverse natural and recreational spaces.
