Chicago, situated on the shores of Lake Michigan, has grown into one of the largest and most influential cities in the United States. It became a critical transportation hub with its railroads, stockyards, and later, O’Hare International Airport—one of the busiest in the world. Chicago’s rapid industrialization and its architectural innovation have given it one of the most recognizable skylines in the world, with over 100 skyscrapers, including the Willis Tower and the John Hancock Center.

Chicago encompasses all of Cook County, forming one of the most densely populated and economically powerful regions in the country. Its diverse economy thrives on finance, manufacturing, technology, and healthcare. As home to the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, it has established itself as a global financial hub. The city’s history includes surviving and rebuilding after the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, which spurred a wave of architectural development that continues to define the city.

Culturally, Chicago is celebrated as the birthplace of blues and house music and is home to renowned institutions like the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Goodman Theatre. Chicago’s downtown area, The Loop, combines business, entertainment, and culture, with world-class museums, expansive public spaces like Millennium Park, and the future Barack Obama Presidential Center. Its sports legacy is equally iconic, with teams in every major league, including the Bears (NFL), Bulls (NBA), Blackhawks (NHL), Fire (MLS), Cubs and White Sox (MLB)

Also known as the “Second City,” Chicago currently has over 5.2 million people and would be the 23rd largest state if admitted today, with a population larger than the seven smallest states combined. With a GDP of $822 billion, Chicago’s economy ranks among the largest in the world.

If Chicagoland was admitted as a state today, it would be the 23rd largest by population, between Minnesota and South Carolina.
